Citizenship Certificate Form CIT 0001E
Form CIT 0001E is used by Canadian Citizens, who reside in or outside of Canada when they need to prove their Citizenship. Any Canadian Citizen over the age of 18 may apply for a citizenship certificate. A parent may also apply on behalf of a minor under the age of 18. In this case, the minor will be the applicant and all answers provided must be related to the applicant.
You may apply for Certificate of Citizenship if you want to:
- Have proof of your Canadian Citizenship
- Make sure that you are a Canadian Citizen
- Update or modify the information on your certificate (e.g.; legal name change)
- Replace a lost, stolen or destroyed certificate
If your previously issued Citizenship Certificate has been lost, stolen, damaged, or your personal information is outdated, then you should complete Form CIT 0001E to request a replacement.
Canadian Citizenship through Parents
Changes made to the Citizenship Act in 2009, and 2015 gave Canadian citizenship to people who lost it and recognized others as citizens for the first time. However, the Citizenship Act now limits citizenship to the first generation born or adopted outside of Canada.
Citizens born outside of Canada to at least one parent who is a Canadian citizen, will only be considered citizens if at the time of birth:
- The parent was born in Canada
- The parent became a Canadian Citizenship through naturalization
- Adopted by Canadian parents
Children who are not eligible for Canadian citizenship under the Citizenship Act may be eligible to be sponsored as a permanent resident. Once a child becomes a permanent resident, they may apply for citizenship after their 18th birthday.
